So what do we eat?
About our "Schedule"...

While at my dayhome your child will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, which promote all aspects of development. Family childcare provides for children the comfort and experience of belonging to an extended family. I provide a home like setting; therefore I do not follow a strict routine. My approach to childcare is child centered and child directed. Children are offered choices whenever  possible.

Our schedule will vary depending on the school year. Summer a bit more relaxed and school months will have more structure but nothing is set in stone except for the school bell...
 
7:30am -8:30am  Morning welcomes and quiet play. Breakfast @ 7:30am  ( if needed).
8:50am - Time to go to school! (skip this step for all school breaks).
9:15am - Morning Snack
9:30am - Morning activities, reading, coloring, imaginative play, playdough or other sensory activity.
11am - Outside time (weather permitting)
12pm - Lunch time!!
1pm - Quiet time/Nap time
2:30 - 3:00pm Transition into afternoon, quiet play.
3:15  - Snack
3:30 - Free Play
4:00 - Kids back from school, after school snack and transition into free play
4:30 - Outside time (weather permitting)
5:00 - 5:30 - Evening good-byes!
 
In the morning/ early afternoon we may spend the morning at the playground, adventure to the spray park, go to our community play group or visit the grocery store.
This schedule is to give you an idea of how we would spend a regular day at my home.
 
 
 

I believe in a healthy diet for children and I ensure I go above and beyond the Canadian Food guide.

Our family has made it a bit of a ritual to go to the Cross Roads farmers market almost every weekend. This is where we stock up on tons of fruits, veggies, free range organic eggs and chicken. My most recent favorite find are baby carrots that look like "real" carrots, from the friendly Mennonite farms. Our one sinful lunch indulgence is Kraft dinner, I loved it when I was a kid and it is still loved!

I am very fond of baking. Not so much in the summer months when it's hot but almost everyday from September - June.

That being said I'm not the best meal planner I generally plan out my meals 2-3 days ahead of time or even the day of. I'm getting there....

 

Here is an example of what we eat;

Breakfast - I do prefer breakfast being served at home. I believe it sets a good routine for the children and averts potential crankiness in the morning. I do provide it at 7:30 am just let me know if they haven't eaten. This is pretty standard - Low sugar cereal with yogurt or milk, oatmeal, granola and yogurt or toast. All of these options with a piece of fruit ( banana, apple slices, orange, berries ect.)

AM Snack: My Morning snack usually centers around breakfast, a kind of second breakfast but smaller. This could include; Martha Stewart whole wheat mini pancakes or puffins ( pancakes baked in muffin tins), French toast, regular toast with jam and/or peanut butter, yogurt and granola, various homemade muffins, banana bread and breakfast cookies. All of these items will come with various fresh fruits.

Lunches: Various sandwiches (tuna, ham, turkey, pb&j, veggie), homemade pizza, veggie packed or meat sauce spaghetti (I love this recipe), Kraft dinner, tuna or chicken melts, homemade chicken noodle soup, quesadillas, Sheppard's pie, mini meatloaf, assorted trays ( this is when I pack meat, cheese, crackers, two different fruits & two different veggis, pickles ect) and veggi packed frittata's (glorified omelet), All of these lunches stand with mixed steam or raw veggies, salads, homemade fries, rice, yogurt, fruit sauce, cottage cheese and fruit to name a few.

PM Snack: Veggi and fruit cups (example :mix of baby carrots, snap peas, celery apples with crackers or cookies), Cracker, cheese and apples or pickles, fresh fruit salad with cookies or mini muffins, mini homemade pizza muffins with fruit, muffins and fruit, mini peanut butter crackers with fruit or veggie, yogurt and fruit, granola bars and fruit and veggies, again to name a few.

 

I hope this gives you a good idea of the health minded meals I provide throughout the day. In addition, I tend to be a little sneaky in my baking and cooking. I tend to grind and add things like flax, almonds and various seeds into my baking and grate or chop very fine things like zucchini, kale, squash, spinach ect into my cooking.

Some people call it discipline. I prefer guidance. Children will be treated with courtesy, respect, and patience. Guidance will be according to age and understanding level. Younger children, babies and toddlers, will be redirected to another activity. Older children will also be redirected and coached on how to handle the situation.

 

Depending on the severity of the offense time out may be used. This is the case if someone has intentionally hurt another person or used fowl language. Always 1 minute per year of age, when he/she is sitting calmly. It will very rarely comes to this point and I will often have the children play separately for a short time (break), if I feel they are just not getting along.

 

With older children I strongly encourage them to solve their own problems. I will often coach them with their communications teaching them when they approach a situation from a positive outlook they will often get a positive response. " No one likes whining not even your friends, try to use a mature voice". This is often said in my house with great results.

I will also use this with my younger toddlers, but it is a little more involved. I will usually guide them through the whole process when there is a dispute they cannot resolve themselves.

 

I feel very strongly about children being able to communicate effectively and in a positive manner, I believe it builds a wonderful confidence and emotional balance in their young little lives.

 

If a child does become a persistent with behavior  problems, I will address it with you and we will try to resolve it together.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Our family lives in a 3 bedroom main floor bungalow. My sister in law  lives in the downstairs suite. I love that the whole house is occupied by close family.

 

Because I do not have a seperate play area or finished basement, I have converted my living room into our main dayhome space. It has been a work in progress and I feel I have created a warm, welcoming and fun enviroment.

My daughters room can be used as a play area for the girls/preschoolers and my boys room can be used for boys/school - aged children. This option is nice when the girls and/or boys need some space.

 

Both these rooms have strict rules and are monitored frequently. There are also items in both rooms that are off limits to the dayhome. If the guidlines of these rooms are not followed, the priveledge of being able to play in that area is taken away. My children also reserve the right to play in their rooms alone when they need their own space.

 

We have a large backyard that we play in all the time aswell as several parks within walking distance.
